Dear Premier Ford,

I would like to thank you for passing historic legislation to ban invasive medical research on dogs and cats. I am writing to ask you to please also ban invasive medical research on non-human primates as well, by adding them as a prescribed animal under the regulations of the Animals for Research Act.

Recently, disturbing video footage surfaced of York University's research involving nine rhesus macaques. The monkeys were housed in barren cages with cranial implants and restraint collars, displaying signs of distress that included pulling out their hair and rocking back and forth. Some of the monkeys had spent more than a decade in laboratory confinement.

Much of this research takes place behind closed doors, with limited public information about animal welfare or the benefits produced by these programs. Taxpayers are asked to fund this work year after year with little opportunity for meaningful scrutiny. Many drugs and treatments that appear promising in animal experiments ultimately fail in human clinical trials. At the same time, advances in non-animal research methods are providing alternatives that may be more accurate, less costly, and free from the ethical concerns associated with primate experimentation.

Non-human primates are highly intelligent, emotionally complex individuals capable of forming deep social bonds, recognizing individuals, and experiencing fear, anxiety and grief. Many possess sophisticated cognitive abilities, including problem-solving skills, self-awareness, and the capacity to form lasting social relationships.

Under your leadership, Ontario has already taken the first step by recognizing that some forms of animal experimentation no longer reflect modern values. The next step should be clear: banning invasive medical research on non-human primates. I urge you to add non-human primates as a prescribed animal under the regulations of the Animals for Research Act.
