Ontario took a historic step when it banned invasive medical research on dogs and cats. Now, it must take the next step by banning invasive medical research on non-human primates.

On 4/30/2026, LCA released an undercover investigation exposing the suffering of nine rhesus macaques used in neuroscience studies at York University. The footage shows monkeys suffering from cranial implants, restraint collars, social isolation and water deprivation. Many had spent over a decade in confinement. Combined, they were subjected to over 80 surgeries.

Non-human primates are highly intelligent, emotionally complex individuals capable of forming deep social bonds, recognizing individuals, and experiencing fear, anxiety and grief. Many possess sophisticated cognitive abilities, including problem-solving skills, self-awareness, and the capacity to form lasting social relationships.

Ontario has already taken the first step by recognizing that some forms of animal experimentation no longer reflect modern values. The next step should be clear: banning invasive medical research on non-human primates.
