Dear Chair - Arts, Parks Committee Jurado,

I urge you to support the Rodeo Ordinance introduced by Councilmember Blumenfield.

The ordinance would ban six cruel rodeo events including bull riding, which is brought to Los Angeles by a Texas-based touring organization, Professional Bull Riders. Events celebrating Latino heritage, music, food, horsemanship demonstrations, and other cultural activities are exempt and can continue under the ordinance.

In 2023, the City Council unanimously voted to ban the Rodeo in the City of Los Angeles.  Subsequently, the City Attorney drafted the ordinance, which is awaiting a hearing before the Arts, Parks, Libraries, and Community Enrichment Committee and final Council passage.

Rodeos are inherently cruel. Animals are chased, wrangled, roped, and tormented for entertainment. The horses, bulls, steers, and calves can suffer from painful injuries, including broken ribs, backs, and legs, torn tails, punctured lungs, internal organ damage, snapped necks, and agonizing deaths.

These practices are not a reflection of cultural values but rather a form of exploitation and animal abuse. In fact, recently, Mexico City just made bullfighting illegal after 500 years of animal suffering.

Injuries are chronically underreported — including an incident last year where a bucking bull suffered a fatal injury at the Orange County Fair Rodeo and it was not reported to the Veterinary Medical Board as required by state law.

Angelenos have a strong history of supporting animal friendly lawmakers and legislation.
