TELL CANADA'S FISHERIES MINISTER TO DENY MARINELAND CANADA'S BELUGA WHALE EXPORT PERMITS
Marineland Canada has applied for an export permit to sell its 30 remaining beluga whales to the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China.
Marineland has been closed to the public for over a year. Since 2019, there have been 20 cetacean deaths. There has been no clear communication about the fate of the animals, their health, or why deaths keep occuring.
While the situation at Marineland is dire, exporting the beluga whales to China is not the answer.
China has no national laws against mistreating captive animals, and its marine parks have a well-documented history of neglect and abuse.
If sent to Chimelong, the whales would be at risk of being used for entertainment. The park's website boasts the "Beluga Theatre" which features captive beluga's performing under the guidance of trainers.
Chimelong also breeds cetaceans, publicly documenting the birth of 17 calves, including orcas and beluga's, between 2014-2023.
The export of cetaceans from Canada is illegal under Canadian law, unless the the Minister of Fisheries issues a special permit. Under the same law, beluga whales are not allowed to be bred or used for performances.
