Dear President Philipps,

I am shocked and saddened to learn that York University uses nine rhesus macaques in neuroscience experiments. As someone who cares deeply about animal welfare, I urge York to stop its research on primates, prioritize non-animal testing methods, and retire the nine rhesus macaques to a reputable sanctuary.

A recent investigation by Last Chance for Animals exposed York’s treatment of these macaques. I believe the conditions they are forced to endure are inhumane and do not meet the ethical standards the public expects of a leading academic institution.

The Jane Goodall Institute is calling on York to retire the nine macaques from research and move beyond primate research.

The continued confinement of these nine macaques, many of whom have spent most of their lives in research, is inexcusable. York University has the authority and the responsibility to end this suffering.

Public perceptions of animal research are changing, and there is growing concern about the use of animals in scientific research. York University has an opportunity to demonstrate strong leadership by ending these practices and setting a higher standard for ethical, humane, and non-animal research.
